Executive Search is more than filling leadership roles – it is about values, culture, and character. At Coopers Executive, we firmly believe that sustainable placements only happen when people truly fit together. 

In an interview, our Managing Director Christian Biedermann explains our approach to Executive Search. 

Christian, you work in Executive Search – a field often associated with cold calculation and numbers. What does humanity mean to you in this context? 
Christian Biedermann (CB): For me, one thing is clear: it is always about people, not just CVs. Especially in Executive Search, decisions are often complex and extensive – for companies and for candidates. To me, humanity means taking both their perspectives seriously by listening, and giving honest advice. 

What does that look like in everyday work? 
CB: For example, that we do not just run through a standardized «one-size-fits-all» process. Rather, we take the time to understand the person behind the profile: What drives them? What do they stand for? And do they not only fit the role but also the company culture? That is what makes the difference in Executive Search – and our clients and candidates feel it. 

Has there been a moment that particularly stuck with you? 
CB: Yes, I remember a conversation with a candidate who said to me: “I have rarely been able to speak so openly about my values and ideas of good leadership as I did with you.” That got to me – and showed me that we are on the right track. When there is trust, real change can happen.

People are at the center of what we do. Always! 

How important is authenticity in leadership roles? 
CB: Incredibly important. Leaders who know and live their values radiate clarity and trust. That is much more important today than it used to be. I believe that especially the so-called “softer side” of leadership – empathy, communication, attitude – will only grow in importance. 

What sets Coopers Executive apart? 
CB: We maintain close, partnership-like collaborations – with our clients, candidates, and within our team. We are down-to-earth, transparent, and honest. If something does not feel right, we will say so. That takes courage, but it is exactly what makes the difference and what our stakeholders value. 

Many providers in Executive Search focus heavily on data and process efficiency. What’s your approach? 
CB: We see that too – and of course, data structure matter. But they cannot replace real, personal conversations. We do not believe in matching algorithms alone. What counts is human insight, intuition, and experience. Our USP is that we combine both: analytical, structured search processes and humanity, especially empathy. 

What is your wish for the future of Executive Search? 
CB: More courage to be human. Fewer buzzwords, more real conversations. And that our industry continues to contribute to matching good leadership with good character.
