Panel-Diskussion beim Executives Hautnah Event in der Orangerie Basel.

Leaders talk about many things. Strategies, numbers, markets. Less so about mistakes, crises and doubt. With Executives Hautnah, we want to create a space that is close enough to share those moments too.

Our second evening proved: it works.

Svenja Staiger and Andrej Salat  did not simply present success stories that evening in April. They gave us a glimpse into their thoughts and experiences where tradition and transformation create tension. With mistakes, doubts and moments of not knowing whether you are doing the right thing.

How to build trust in times of transformation?

Svenja put it plainly: "There is nothing worse than a manager who comes into the office in a different mood every morning." Because reliability is the foundation on which trust is built. Svenja, HR Director, comes from the pharmaceutical world and now meets 130 years of tradition at Basler Verkehrs-Betriebe BVB. Her task: evolve the culture, not destroy it. And she knows: "Without culture, strategy stays on paper."

Andrej, General Manager at Mepha / Teva Switzerland, agrees: "Culture takes longer than the new strategy." Andrej inherited a high-performing team from someone who had made decisions alone for over 20 years. He could simply have continued in the same way. Instead, he asked himself: "What do I want and what do I not want?" And then the decisive sentence: "The mandate comes from myself." This shows that it is not strategy that changes everything. It is mindset.

Co-Creation is built on the «co»

Andrej openly shares his experiment with co-creation and what went wrong. The intention was good, but he delegated too early and gave too little guidance. The result after one year: "The organization no longer makes decisions." His lesson: delegation is not the same as empowerment. And co-creation takes time. "Until the team dances along with co-creation, it all remains theoretical," he says.

As the evening progressed, it became clear that the reality of co-creation is more complex than the theory, especially when it comes to vertical versus horizontal dimensions. An audience question shed light on exactly this tension: how does co-creation within teams differ from co-creation across hierarchical levels? And how is empowerment truly lived when things go wrong?

Svenja's answer cuts to the core: "If I get empowerment right, I have to hand over the task together with the authority, not just the responsibility." Delegating responsibility is not the same as delegating power. Without genuine freedom to act, empowerment remains an empty promise.

Svenja also highlights how powerful participative strategy work can be: "People cannot complain because they were part of it." Something new is taking shape at BVB: employees at every level are being asked for their opinion. A step that carries its own significance in a company with 130 years of history.

And yet, there are limits. "If you are on the Titanic and see the iceberg, you do not call a team meeting first," says Andrej. Participation is not the same as democracy. There are moments when leadership requires a fast, clear decision. Participation and decisiveness are not mutually exclusive.

Feedback and outlook

It is moments like these, and many more, that show how the evening sparked reflection for speakers and guests alike. That is the value we aim to create with Executives Hautnah.

The feedback speaks for itself: 5 / 5 for organization and location, 4.9 / 5 for the event overall. 100% of respondents would attend again, and 100% made valuable new connections.

What makes Executives Hautnah special: no lengthy agenda, no formal setting. Instead, a relaxed evening at Orangerie Basel with a good glass of wine from Vinaiolo and bites from Etna Pasticceria. An atmosphere that invites you to be yourself, not play a role.

A warm thank you to Svenja and Andrej for their openness, to all guests who joined, and to everyone who kept the conversations going long after the panel. A special thanks as well to our team behind the scenes who made the evening possible.
